The Eglinton Way loves its collection of independent retailers and the people who run them. It’s these passionate individuals who truly embody our Style Lives Here brand. We’d like to introduce you to Naomi Zeligman, co-owner of fashion boutique, Sense of Independence, and all-round fashionable gal. We sat down with her to get a sense of what it’s like to run Sense of Independence.
The Eglinton Way: Hi Naomi, thanks for sitting down with us! Let’s begin with what your day-to-day is like – what’s it like running Sense of Independence?
Naomi: It really depends on the day. I travel for business on buying trips; mostly to LA and the fashion conventions in Las Vegas and New York. If you catch me on a day at the store, I usually arrive a few minutes early, coffee and breakfast in hand after dropping off the kids at school to unwind before my day starts. Once the store opens, I am busy helping customers, receiving new inventory, reordering best sellers, placing orders for future seasons, planning photo shoots for our website and up-keeping cleanliness around the store.
The Eglinton Way: How many years you have working in this industry?
Naomi: I’ve been in the fashion industry for about 20 years. I started working in chain stores as a teenager and then moved on to become an entrepreneur. Our store has been open for 13 years!
The Eglinton Way: What are your style inspirations?
Naomi: I follow and read multiple fashion blogs and magazines. I love seeing a compilation of what the high end designers come up with and see how I can buy similar styles that are more commercial. I also love watching how celebrities put themselves together and what styles they have. I enjoy reading Fashion, Elle, and celebrity gossip magazines such as In Style and OK Magazine. Cupcakes and Cashmere is great too. As for my personal style, anything that is stylish and COMFORTABLE at the same time. I think that is the key to easy dressing. I have two kids and lead a very busy life. It is important for me to dress in all the up to date fashions but they have to work with my lifestyle. That is the mantra I lead with at the store. If something is trendy but uncomfortable, you won’t see me wearing it, or selling it in the store.
The Eglinton Way: What’s on your playlist right now?
Naomi: Anything for my kids. They are the most important people in my life. To see them happy, singing and dancing brings the biggest smile to my face. You can often catch me singing in the car, jamming with my kids on the way to school at pick up and drop off. Let It Go from the movie Frozen is my daughters favourite song right now. My son is loving anything by Michael Jackson, especially Thriller ( he’s clearly going through a zombie phase). For me, I’ve got a little top 40.
The Eglinton Way: What’s on your to-do list this week?
Naomi: To get in all the Spring/Summer 2017 orders in before their deadlines! I love to compare what all my brands are doing before placing my orders to make sure I only buy the best styles from each collection.
The Eglinton Way: What is the most interesting part of your line of work?
Naomi: The people and connections I make with my customers. Hands down. Stick me in a desk job and I think I would go crazy!
