The Eglinton Way’s Style Lives Here brand was inspired by the collection of independent shopping boutiques in the neighbourhood. One such gem is Bella on Eglinton that’s owned and operated by Melissa Guido. She’s charming, personable, and knows how to dress. Melissa recently sat down with Sheliza from The Eglinton Way to talk about Bella.
The Eglinton Way: Good morning, Melissa. Tell me, why did you choose the fashion industry?
Melissa: I have loved clothing and fashion since I was a little girl. I recall a childhood memory of my first day of JK… a girl in my class was wearing the same dress I was. I remember coming home from school complaining to my mom that I wanted to be the only one with the clothes I was wearing. Since that day she has said to me countless times, “they don’t just make one article of clothing for you.” A girl can dream.
Clothes that you feel good in can help with confidence and self-esteem. They change how you feel about yourself and how others perceive you. Clothing, in my opinion, is more than just a necessity, it’s empowerment. Fashion has always been my passion. I’ve been lucky to turn it into a career, and now I never feel like I’m going to “work”. I’m blessed to be able to shop with wonderful women everyday and help them feel great in pieces I’ve chosen. I’m very lucky!
The Eglinton Way: You’ve got an amazing passion for fashion. What trends are you seeing this season?
Melissa: Floral patterns are very popular for spring and summer. We’re seeing lots of shades of pink and blue. The cold shoulder is definitely a trend and off-the-shoulder blouses and dresses in patterns and prints. As for shoes, mules and backless footwear are very popular right now. Delicate gold jewelry is also on trend for accessories.
Melissa steams a dress as she answers my questions (always multitasking), and I peruse the accessories at the front table. Bella carries jewellery from Amarilo. It’s very chic and goes well with the fun floral and patterned dresses around the store.
The Eglinton Way: I’ve definitely been seeing a lot of the off-the-shoulder look recently. What’s a typical day at Bella like?
Melissa: A typical day keeps me on my toes. I usually have a delivery or two most days of the week. I send out email blasts, unpack new merchandise, and post social media updates all while shopping with clients who come in to check out what’s new in the store!
The Eglinton Way: Never a dull day in the store! Who are your style icons?
Melissa: I love Victoria Beckham. Her line is so sophisticated. It’s basic, yet current. I love everything about her style.
The Eglinton Way: She’s got a classic but interesting presence, for sure. She’s also another fabulous entrepreneur like you. Last question Melissa, what advice would you give to other young entrepreneurs?
Melissa: Figure out what you love and find a way to turn that passion into a career. Work hard.
